Steri Castle

Located in Palermo's Kalsa district, this splendid structure, open to the public every day except Monday, was the official residence of Sicily's kings and viceroys for two centuries. Read about it in a new article.

Of special interest are the Great Hall, with its 14th-century ceiling paintings, and the jail, which has graffiti written by prisoners.

Cuffaro goes to jail

Salvatore "Totò" Cuffaro, formerly President ("governor") of the Sicilian Region, went to jail yesterday to begin serving a 7 year sentence for various offenses. He'll certainly be released soon, perhaps for health reasons, but the incarceration culminates investigations and trials, with three appeals, that lasted eight years.

What did Totò do to end up in a Rome prison? There's a long list of things, mostly connected in some way with aiding organized crime. The day before the sentence in Rome, Totò offered cannoli to some of his closest friends.
