Summer Daze

August, with its beaches and vacations, is greatly anticipated by most Italians. It does, however, have a downside, apart from the torrid temperatures.

Ferragosto, August 15th, is a national holiday. This year it fell on a Thursday, encouraging people to take the following day off from work to enjoy an extended weekend. But the entire week of Ferragosto finds many offices and stores closed. In Sicily the post office is closed afternoons for the entire month.

What this means is that life here doesn't get back to normal - whatever "normal" is - until September, which this year begins on a Sunday. Welcome to our world.

Abatellis Regional Art Gallery

It is described so little in guidebooks, and so "difficult" to find, that the Palazzo Abatellis Gallery is considered something of a local secret in Palermo. Yet its collection is exceptional. Shown here is a painting by Antonello da Messina, one of the first oil painters of the Renaissance.

But the gallery is open most of the Summer - except on August 15th, a national holiday.

And it really isn't very hard to find.
