September Chestnuts

Daily high temperatures in many parts of Sicily - especially in lower areas near the coasts - are still close to 80 (26 C) but a few days ago Roberta Gangi, our food editor, saw a street vendor in Palermo roasting chestnuts. Just like the ones in our pic.

A few weeks early, perhaps, but why not? Check out her article about Sicilian chestnuts.

Back to Work

The first days of September find Italians returning to work after a long August vacation taken en masse. Ridiculous, perhaps, that everybody goes on holiday at the same time, but it's been that way for decades.

Fewer and fewer Sicilians have jobs to return to. Two days ago the Italian press reported that unemployment, especially among "youth" (anybody under 30) is higher than ever. Some journalists even referred to 2013 as an economic "Black Year."

Among this site's emails - hundreds each day even without the spam - are occasional remarks from hecklers. We really don't have time to respond to such nonsense, but I recall one from a local (Sicilian-born) critic of our jobs in Sicily page who thought our comments there were "true" but unpleasant.

With publication of the most recent national figures, they just got a lot more unpleasant.
